The tenement house at Smolna 40 was built in 1903 for Count Ksawery Branicki. Its prestigious location — right next to the Royal Route — influenced the post-war decision to establish the headquarters of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party in this very place.
The communist party later moved across Jerozolimskie Avenue to a new building, and the premises at Smolna became the seat of the Socialist Union of Polish Youth (ZSMP). Under its administration, and burdened by an unclear legal status, the building gradually deteriorated. In 2014, Budizol purchased the neglected property from Anna Branicka-Wolska and other shareholders.
The company resolved the legal issues and made every effort to ensure that the building, while preserving its substantial historic value, met contemporary standards. The façade and main gate impress with classical detailing. In accordance with heritage conservation requirements, the mansard roof features a modern form. The courtyard wing, in turn, contrasts with the rest of the building through the use of contemporary materials.
In 2017, a four-star hotel was opened in the meticulously restored tenement house, combining authentic local experiences, contemporary design, modern technologies, and highly personalized service.
